A cousin of mine joined as a Grade III teacher in Jorhat last year, and her first real shock wasn’t the basic pay itself it was the gap between the number on her appointment letter and what actually landed in her bank account. Nobody had walked her through DA, HRA, NPS, or why P-Tax and GIS were both quietly taking a slice before the money even reached her. She assumed something was wrong with her account for the first two months.
Nothing was wrong that’s just what a government salary slip looks like once every component is applied. Here’s the full breakdown, and a calculator so you can see your own numbers before the first payslip surprises you.
What actually makes up your gross salary
Basic Pay is only the starting point. On top of it, Assam State Government employees get Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, and a Fixed Medical Allowance and DA is the part that changes most often.
As of July 2026, the Assam Cabinet has revised DA to 60% of Basic Pay, up from 58%. If you’ve seen an older figure of 50% quoted anywhere, that’s outdated the current notified rate is higher.
HRA depends on where you’re posted, not your pay level:
| Posting Location | HRA Rate |
|---|---|
| Guwahati Metro (Kamrup Metro) | 10% of Basic Pay |
| District Headquarter Towns | 8% of Basic Pay |
| Rural / Field Postings | 7% of Basic Pay |
On top of DA and HRA, everyone gets a flat ₹600/month Fixed Medical Allowance, regardless of posting or pay level.
What comes out before you see the money
Three deductions apply every month:
- NPS 10% of (Basic Pay + DA)
- Professional Tax (P-Tax) based on your gross salary slab, up to ₹208/month
- GIS (Group Insurance Scheme) ₹400/month for Class I & II employees, ₹200/month for Class III & IV
That GIS split by class is exactly the kind of detail that gets missed on a first payslip — my cousin, being Class III, was expecting ₹400 to come out because that’s the number a colleague had mentioned, not realising he was in a different class.
How the calculation works
- DA = Basic Pay × 0.60
- HRA = Basic Pay × (0.10, 0.08, or 0.07 depending on posting)
- Gross Salary = Basic Pay + DA + HRA + ₹600
- NPS = (Basic Pay + DA) × 0.10
- Total Deductions = NPS + P-Tax + GIS
- Net Take-Home = Gross Salary − Total Deductions
Worked example — Grade III teacher, Basic Pay ₹35,400, Guwahati posting
DA (60%): ₹21,240
HRA (10%): ₹3,540
Gross Salary: ₹35,400 + ₹21,240 + ₹3,540 + ₹600 = ₹60,780
NPS: (₹35,400 + ₹21,240) × 0.10 = ₹5,664
P-Tax (above ₹25,000 slab): ₹208
GIS (Class III): ₹200
Total Deductions: ₹6,072
Net Take-Home: ₹54,708
Now a Class I officer on a higher pay band, posted at a District HQ:
Worked example Class I officer, Basic Pay ₹56,100, District HQ posting
DA (60%): ₹33,660
HRA (8%): ₹4,488
Gross Salary: ₹56,100 + ₹33,660 + ₹4,488 + ₹600 = ₹94,848
NPS: (₹56,100 + ₹33,660) × 0.10 = ₹8,976
P-Tax: ₹208
GIS (Class I): ₹400
Total Deductions: ₹9,584
Net Take-Home: ₹85,264

Some things people ask us often
What is the current DA rate for Assam Government Employees?
The current Dearness Allowance rate is 60% of Basic Pay, effective from the July 2026 revision.
How much HRA do Assam state employees get in Guwahati compared to other districts?
10% of Basic Pay in Guwahati Metro, 8% in District Headquarter towns, and 7% in rural or field postings.
How is NPS deducted from an Assam Government employee’s salary?
NPS is deducted at 10% of Basic Pay plus DA combined, every month.
I just got promoted mid-year and my Basic Pay changed from ₹35,400 to ₹38,600 — does my P-Tax slab change immediately too, or only from the next financial year?
Immediately, from the month your revised pay takes effect. P-Tax is assessed on your gross salary for that specific month, not on an annual figure, so a mid-year jump in Basic Pay can push you into a higher P-Tax slab starting the very next payslip.
Are medical allowance and GIS fixed for all Assam state employees?
Fixed Medical Allowance is ₹600/month for everyone. GIS is ₹400/month for Class I & II employees and ₹200/month for Class III & IV.
Is this an official salary calculator?
No. This uses the officially notified DA, HRA, NPS, and GIS rates to give you a reliable estimate, but your actual salary slip is generated by your department’s treasury or DDO this calculator gets you close, not a substitute for your payslip.

DA rates and pay commission notifications get revised periodically, so it’s worth checking directly:
If your payslip doesn’t match what this calculator shows, the DA or HRA rate is usually the first place to check — both get revised more often than most employees expect, and an outdated figure carried over from an old notification is the most common reason for a mismatch.
