My domestic help gets her cylinder refilled under Ujjwala, and she once asked me why her neighbour, also on a “government gas connection,” pays a completely different amount at delivery. Turned out the neighbour had a general domestic connection, not a PMUY one, and the ₹300 subsidy simply doesn’t apply the same way. Two women, both getting the same size cylinder from the same distributor, paying noticeably different amounts, for a reason neither of them had ever had explained clearly. That’s the confusion this calculator sorts out, what you actually pay depends on which category your connection falls under, not just the size of the cylinder.

Notice the retail price is identical for PMUY and general domestic connections, it’s the subsidy that changes, not the sticker price at delivery.
₹300 vs a much smaller number
That gap is exactly what confused my domestic help’s neighbour. Both are 14.2 kg domestic cylinders from the same distributor, both cost ₹991 at retail, but a PMUY connection gets a ₹300 subsidy credited to the linked bank account after delivery, while a general domestic connection gets a much smaller, separately notified DBTL amount, usually somewhere between ₹40 and ₹70 depending on the current central government order. It’s not a delivery-day discount either way, the subsidy lands in the bank account after the transaction, through PAHAL.
The 5 kg Chotu cylinder
This smaller cylinder is aimed at single occupants, students, and migrant workers who don’t need a full 14.2 kg connection, common in Guwahati’s rented rooms and hostels. It carries a pro-rata share of the subsidy rather than the full ₹300, since it holds roughly a third of the gas a standard domestic cylinder does.
How the calculation works
- Gross Bill = Number of refills × Retail price
- Total Subsidy = Number of refills × Subsidy per cylinder
- Net Expense = Gross Bill − Total Subsidy
Subsidy on the 14.2 kg cylinder is capped at 12 refills a year per household, anything beyond that gets billed at full retail price with no DBTL credit.
