Bigger consumers, malls, hotels, large offices above 25 kW, move to HT Commercial and get billed differently, on kVAh rather than plain kWh.

That jump from ₹7.50 to ₹9.80 between the lowest and highest slab is exactly what caught the shop owner off guard. It isn’t a penalty, it’s just how progressive slabs work, every unit doesn’t cost the same once you cross a threshold.
What actually goes into a commercial bill
Five things, and most bills only show the final number without breaking them apart. Energy Charges, the slab-wise cost of whatever units were actually consumed that month. Fixed Demand Charge, calculated on sanctioned load in kW, not on usage, ₹130 per kW every month whether the shop runs full hours or stays half-shut for a week. Power Factor Adjustment. This one surprises people the most. Air conditioners and deep freezers pull inductive load, and if Power Factor drops below 0.85, a penalty gets added. Keep it above 0.95 and some categories get a rebate instead. State Electricity Duty, a flat 5% on the energy charges. FPPPA Surcharge, a variable fuel cost adjustment, roughly ₹0.45 per unit, that moves depending on the quarter.
How to Use the Calculator

A worked example from Paltan Bazar
Take a retail shop with a 4 kW sanctioned load and 500 units consumed in a month, close to what that saree shop was actually running.
Run the neighbouring shop’s numbers through the same table, even 40-50 extra units past 400 adds almost ₹10 per unit at the top slab, and that gap compounds fast across a full month.
Why the difference isn’t a mistake
Commercial tariffs sit higher than domestic ones on purpose. Part of it is cross-subsidy, businesses effectively help keep domestic and agricultural rates lower, and part of it is that commercial areas cost more to maintain on the grid, denser load, more frequent servicing, higher fault response priority. Worth knowing this before assuming the meter reader made an error.

Power Factor batata hai ki aapka load kitni efficiently electricity use kar raha hai. AC aur deep freezer jaise inductive loads Power Factor ko neeche gira sakte hain. 0.85 se neeche jaane par penalty lagti hai, 0.95 se upar rakhne par kai baar rebate milta hai.
