My uncle in Guwahati once called me confused because his neighbour, running what looked like a similar-sized household, had a noticeably lower per-unit rate on his bill. Turned out the neighbour’s connection was still classified as Domestic-A under 5 kW, while my uncle’s had been upgraded to a higher sanctioned load somewhere along the way, quietly pushing him into a different tariff category altogether. Nobody had explained that the category, not just the consumption, decides your rate. That’s the part most people miss about their APDCL bill. Here’s exactly how it’s calculated, category by category, and a calculator to work out your own number.

APDCL domestic tariff categories

Assam doesn’t bill every household the same way, your sanctioned connected load decides which category you fall under, and each category works differently.

Notice Domestic-A is the one with progressive slabs, Domestic-B is a single flat rate regardless of how much you use. If your sanctioned load crosses 5 kW, you lose the cheaper early slabs entirely and pay ₹7.74 on every unit from the first.

Jeevan Dhara has a trapdoor

This is the cheapest tariff in the state, meant for very small connections, but it comes with a condition worth knowing. If a Jeevan Dhara consumer goes over 45 units in a month for two consecutive months, APDCL automatically moves the connection to Domestic-A, and it stays there regardless of usage afterward. It’s not a warning-and-revert system, the shift is permanent once triggered.

The Time of Day rebate

If you have a smart meter, when you use electricity matters, not just how much.

• 10 PM to 9 AM (normal hours): standard rate
• 9 AM to 5 PM (solar hours): 80% of the normal rate, a 20% rebate
• 5 PM to 10 PM (peak hours): 120% of the normal rate, a 20% surcharge

Running heavy appliances, washing machines, water heaters, EV charging, during the day rather than the evening genuinely changes your bill on a smart meter connection.

How the calculation works

1. Apply your category’s energy charge, slab-by-slab for Domestic-A, flat for Domestic-B
2. Add the Fixed Charge (Rate × Sanctioned Load in kW)
3. Add 5% Electricity Duty on the Energy Charges
4. Adjust for Time of Day rebate or surcharge if you’re on a smart meter

FPPPA ka matlab hai Fuel and Power Purchase Price Adjustment, fuel aur power purchase cost me badlav ke mutabiq AERC ki approval se lagne wala variable charge. Current tariff order full-cost basis par hai, isliye ye har bill par alag se ek fixed rate ke roop mein nahi dikhta, apne current bill par is line item ko directly check karna sabse reliable rahega.

Online APDCL bill kaise download aur pay karein?

apdcl.org portal par jayein ya APDCL Smart Meter mobile app par apna 12-digit Consumer ID enter karke bill dekh aur pay kar sakte hain.

Agar monthly consumption 240 units se upar chali jaye toh kya poora bill mehnga ho jata hai?

Domestic-A ke liye nahi, sirf 240 units se upar wali extra units par highest rate (₹8.19) lagta hai, pehli 240 units par lower slab rates hi apply hote hain. Lekin Domestic-B par ye sawal hi nahi uthta, kyunki wahan poori consumption par ek hi flat rate lagta hai shuru se.

Prepaid Smart Meter me daily balance kitna kat-ta hai?

Monthly fixed charge aur electricity duty pro-rata basis par daily divide karke katti hai, plus har din consume hone wali units ka applicable slab ya flat charge deduct hota hai.

Hamara ghar 4.8 kW load par register hai lekin humne recently AC aur geyser add kiya hai jisse load badh sakta hai, agar hum 5 kW cross kar gaye to kya automatically Domestic-B lag jayega?

Nahi, automatically nahi. Category change tabhi hota hai jab aap apna sanctioned load officially APDCL se revise karwate hain, sirf actual usage badh jaane se system khud category nahi badalta. Lekin agar aap without informing extra load draw kar rahe hain jo aapke sanctioned load se zyada hai baar baar, ye ek separate issue ban sakta hai inspection ke waqt, isliye load badhane se pehle load enhancement apply karna hi safe tareeka hai.

Ye rates kab tak valid hain?

Ye rates AERC ke 25.03.2025 wale order se approved hain aur abhi bhi bills par effective hain. APDCL ne FY 2026-27 ke liye inhi rates ko bina kisi hike ke continue karne ka proposal AERC ke saamne submit kiya hai, final confirmation abhi pending hai. Practically, rates ke same rehne ki sambhavna zyada hai, lekin agar AERC koi revision approve karti hai, to naya order effective hone ke baad rates change ho sakte hain.
