Assam Water Bill Calculator

Guwahati Jal Board (GMDW&SB) Official Water Tariff Calculator 2026-27

A relative of mine in Guwahati got a water bill last month that was almost triple what she usually pays, and her first assumption was a billing error. Turned out her family had genuinely used more water that month, a guest had stayed over for two weeks, and once she crossed into the next consumption slab, the rate per kilolitre jumped too, not just the volume. Nobody had explained to her that Guwahati’s water tariff isn’t flat, it climbs the more you use.

That’s the part most people don’t realise until a bill surprises them. Here’s how Guwahati’s water tariff actually works, slab by slab, and a calculator to check your own monthly usage before the bill does it for you.

Who bills you for water in Guwahati

Metered water connections in Guwahati are billed by the Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water and Sewerage Board, still widely called the Guwahati Jal Board (GJB) by most residents, along with GMC for certain municipal water services. Both names refer to essentially the same billing system, so don’t be thrown off if you see either used on a form or a bill.

Guwahati water tariff slabs

Water bills here work on a Kilolitre basis, 1 kL equals 1,000 litres, and the standard municipal norm assumes about 135 litres per person per day.

Category / Slab Monthly Usage Rate per kL Fixed Charge
Domestic, Slab 1 0 to 15 kL ₹22.00 ₹50/month
Domestic, Slab 2 16 to 25 kL ₹28.00 ₹50/month
Domestic, Slab 3 Above 25 kL ₹35.00 ₹50/month
Commercial (Shop/Office) All consumption ₹55.00 ₹150/month
Institutional (School/Hospital) All consumption ₹40.00 ₹100/month

Only the domestic category is slabbed progressively, commercial and institutional connections pay one flat rate regardless of how much they use, just a higher one.

How the calculation works

Domestic bills aren’t just usage times rate, each slab only charges its own rate on the litres that fall inside it, not on the whole bill.

  1. First 15 kL charged at ₹22/kL
  2. Next 10 kL (16 to 25 kL) charged at ₹28/kL
  3. Anything above 25 kL charged at ₹35/kL
  4. Add the flat ₹50 fixed monthly service charge

Worked example, 22 kL (22,000 litres) household

Slab 1 (First 15 kL @ ₹22): 15 × ₹22 = ₹330
Slab 2 (Remaining 7 kL @ ₹28): 7 × ₹28 = ₹196
Subtotal Volumetric Charges: ₹330 + ₹196 = ₹526
Fixed Service Charge: ₹50
Total Monthly Bill: ₹576

Now an apartment complex sharing one meter:

Worked example, 5-flat apartment complex, 90 kL total

Total Metered Usage: 90 kL (average 18 kL per flat)
Total Monthly Water Bill for Complex: ~₹2,390
Per-Flat Share: ~₹478

That per-flat number is worth comparing against a private tanker, most apartment complexes save well over half of what a tanker would cost for the same volume, once you’re on a metered municipal connection instead.

Some things people ask us often

Guwahati me ek 4 logon ke parivaar ka monthly water bill kitna aata hai?

Municipal norm ke hisab se, 4 logon ke parivaar ka monthly consumption 15 se 18 kL hota hai, jiska bill roughly ₹470 se ₹550 ke beech aata hai.

Agar water meter kharab ya leak ho jaye toh bill kaise calculate hota hai?

Meter damage hone par app ya helpline par complaint karein. Meter replace hone tak, past 3 mahino ke average consumption ke aadhar par bill generate hota hai.

Water bill late pay karne par kitni penalty lagti hai?

Due date ke baad, 2% per month ki late payment penalty lagti hai, aur 60 din tak unpaid rehne par connection disconnect bhi ho sakta hai.

Hamare building me 8 flats hain aur sabka usage alag alag hai, kuch families choti hain kuch badi, kya sabko equally split kiya jata hai ya jisne zyada use kiya wo zyada dega?

Ye depend karta hai ki building ka setup kaisa hai. Agar ek hi shared meter hai poori building ke liye, GMDWSB sirf total bill deta hai, aur equal ya usage-based split karna society/RWA ka internal decision hota hai. Agar har flat ka apna sub-meter hai, individual usage ke hisab se hi bill divide karna zyada fair rehta hai, especially jab family sizes kaafi alag ho.

Water tariff rates kitni baar revise hoti hain?

Ye fixed schedule par nahi hoti, GMDWSB samay samay par notification ke through revise karta hai. Chunki 2019 me bhi ek proposed hike ki baat samne aayi thi, is calculator ke rates ko current official notification se cross-check karna behtar rahega before finalising a large budget decision.

Is this an official government calculator?

No. This tool applies the published slab rates to estimate your monthly bill. Your actual bill depends on your meter reading and any pending dues, this calculator gets you close, not your official statement.

Official Resources

Tariff notifications and connection procedures do get revised, so it’s worth checking directly:

If your bill jumps sharply from one month to the next, it’s usually either a slab crossover from higher usage, exactly what caught my relative off guard, or a meter issue worth reporting rather than just paying and moving on.
